What to See in Florence

Florence is definitely worth a visit if you go to Italy and there are some gems worth visiting, even if it means that you have to battle the crowds during the high tourist season in the summer time.  If you are only taking a Tuscany vacation, the city of Florence is your ideal starting point.

There is plenty of gorgeous architecture to witness in Florence.  Florence is the classical city which flourished in the Renaissance.  There is Brunelleschi’s Cathedral, the gothic ‘Duomo,’  and the Ponte Vecchio bridge is a definite must-see, constructed in 1345, making it the first bridge in Florence.  There are beautiful churches and cathedrals, town squares, the mosst famous is the Piazza della Signoria, in the center of the city with a sculpture exhibit. The medieval Palazzo Vecchio is situated on the square.  Lineups may be long, but it is worth the wait to visit these buildings and wonders of the architecture world that is Florence.

Visiting the Uffizi Gallery is the one gallery you must also see.  The Uffizi Gallery hosts the most important collections of Renaissance art in the world and medieval to modern art.  These art works include paintings by Titian, Michelangelo and Raphael.  Bring your camera, like everyone else, to take a photo of Michelangelo’s famous marble statue of ‘David’.

If you are looking for the panoramic views of Florence with the famous Dome and the Arno Valley, get yourself to the hilltops at Piazzale Michelangelo.

For experiencing the nightlife in Florence, don’t miss the Fabio Picchi Teatro del Sale, an eclectic combination of trattoria, member’s clubs and theatre.  There is enough to entertain and excite you for the entire night.  You can treat yourself to music, piano sets or poetry readings.  A delightful way to spend an evening in Florence on your vacation.

Shopping in Florence is also a splendid thing.  Head to the Via Turnabuoni for high fashion classical Italian labels such as Gucci, Prado and Pucci.  At the Mercato Centrale on the Via del Ariento, gourmands will encounter a food paradise.  Fresh and delicious local produce piled high at each stall at the Mercato Centrale including such things as olive oil, cheese, balsamic vinegars, herbs, vegetables and fruits.  Local wines from Tuscany are also sold where you can create yourself a veritable feast.

Tuscany vacations packages are an organized way of visiting Tuscany, experiencing some of its major highlights in a short period of time. I have just returned from a short Tuscany vacation, experiencing some of the best of Tuscany in a tour called Beautiful Small Cities Arts in Tuscany. This was a four night tour in three 4 star hotels in three different cities in Tuscany. It was a great deal at $554.77 US and I’ve returned feeling renewed and refreshed after having visited Tuscany again.

The tour included visiting four beautiful cities in Tuscany, as I mentioned, Pisa, Siena and Arezzo. The Tuscany hotels in this Tuscany vacation package include the Hotel Bonanno in Pisa, the Hotel Executive in Siena and the Hotel Il Patio in Arezzo.  The tour price is based on double occupancy.

Tuscany Vacations - Pisa

Pisa, in Tuscany

The Hotel Bonanno is a 4 star hotel with smart, clean, air conditioned rooms, a restaurant (the Bonanno Restaurant) and in a quiet location, with helpful, friendly, polite staff to serve you.  It is close to the town center and ten minutes from the Leaning Tower in Pisa.  After you’ve seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa there is so much to do because it is a city of history, architecture and artistic beauty.  You should also visit the monumental Cemetery, the Baptistry, the Duomo, and the Field of Miracles.  Also, be sure to visit the Museum of the Sinopie and the Museum of the Duomo during your stay in Pisa.

On the road to Siena.  In Siena, you will be staying at the Hotel Executive in a residential neighborhood, with clean, modern décor, air conditioning and wireless Internet access.  Siena is a medieval town; built 322 meters above sea level in the hills.  You’ll find this historical town with many monuments to visit.  Nearby you will find the Duomo Cathedral.  Also, I visited the Palazzo Pubblico (the town hall) to gaze at the magnificent frescoes by Simone Martini and Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti.  Exquisite!

The last town you will visit on the Tuscany package vacation is Arezzo where you will stay at the 4 star hotel, The Hotel Il Patio.  The rooms are all designed with different eclectic themes and each comes with air conditioning, a Jacuzzi shower/bath and sauna – hair dryer , a mini bar, safety box and satellite TV.  Really, a very delightful hotel in Arezzo.

Be sure to sample the Tuscan cuisine while you visit the art galleries, the monuments, the duomos monasteries and churches.  Such delightful food will tantalize your taste buds with the local cuisine.  Don’t forget to sample the delicious wines of Tuscany and pass the hours in the wonderful cafes.  Breathtaking landscapes of rolling green hills, terracotta rooftops, crumbling monasteries, vine yards, shuttered windows and stone walls will treat your eyes. It will almost inspire you to become a painter or photographer or poet, if you are not one already. Tuscany is truly magnificent and you can  experience the pleasures of the region by seeing a small part of Tuscany in depth on a vacation package.

This Tuscany vacation package is offered by italiatours.tourpackagers.com.  ItaliaTours also offers other small tour packages to Tuscany for those who love food.  There is a  ”Enjoy Tuscan Gastronomy” package tour for the gourmands among us.  For the wine lovers, they offer a Chianti Region Wine-Tasting and Dinner Half-Day Trip from Florence featuring scenic drives through the Tuscan landscapes, sampling wine and food.  What could be better?  ItaliaTours also offer another Tuscany vacation package, a half day trip through the Chianti Region Wine Tasting.  The vacation packages are reasonably priced and offer a nice sampling of what Tuscany has to offer its guests to her beautiful lands.  If you have more time, you can combine a couple of these tours together to add to your vacation experience.
