Florence

Florence in Tuscany, the capital city of Italy since 1865,  is indeed a very important city in the history of the arts and the history of Italy. World famous people who come from Florence include some of the very familiar names such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Machiavelli,  Michelangelo, an unending list. When you planning a vacation in Tuscany, Florence the city you are visiting the cradle of the Renaissance and the Athens of the Middle Ages, which witnessed the growth of a large number of monuments, cathedrals, churches and other famous works of art and architecture.

The history of Florence dates back to 59 BC when it was established by Julius Caesar as a settlement for his soldiers, constructed firstly as an army camp. Situated in a very prominent position as the only route between Rome and the north, Florence became a flourishing trade center too. Though there was war in the fourth century, peace returned under the rule of Lombard by the sixth century and later it was made the capital of the region of Tuscany.

The climate, although of the Mediterranean type, has a humid subtropical climate and can be very humid in the summer time. The city is surrounded by hills and can get a bit uncomfortable in the summer.  However, many of the sites to see of Florence are indoors.  In the summer, it is very busy.  Visiting Florence at other times of the year will help to avoid some of the lineups.

For more luxury, there are beautiful villas to rent which would give you a most exquisite experience of Venice and a taste of the kind of architecture so prominent in Florence. Apartments in Florence are also available which may be a good choice if there are a number of you travelling and staying in Florence.  The price will then be quite reasonable, split amongst several people or couples travelling together and you can cook your own food and feel, for a little while, as if you are living in Florence.

You will not want to miss a visit to the city of Florence, this city of romance and the arts where much of the history of Italy and Europe is situated.  Apart from the arts, the architecture and the exquisite views of the scenery, it is a photographer’s dream destination.
